Ford Shelby GT500 view

In April 1970, Rick Wood was studying chemical engineering at the University of Arkansas when he heard that Carroll Shelby had stopped building Shelby Mustangs. A Shelby fan since 1965 after watching an original R-Model destroy the Corvettes at an old military airstrip-turned-racetrack, Rick saw his chance of owning a new Shelby going out the dormitory window. Then he remembered seeing a magazine ad with a list of Shelby dealers.

In 1970, Shelbys were rarely seen on the highway. Just 3,153 were built for '69, with 789 of them updated to '70 models with hood stripes and front chin spoiler. As one of the few people in Arkansas with a new Shelby GT500, Rick showed it off by circling the Dairy Queen in Fayetteville, recalling that people were mostly interested in the reflective side stripes. "On the white car, the stripes were bright blue. They really got attention at night."

Ford Shelby GT500 Unique Performance

In 2002, Carroll Shelby sold a license to a company called Unique Performance in Farmers Branch, Texas, to produce the GT500E, a Shelby based on the "Eleanor" 1967 GT500 featured prominently in the 2000 movie Gone in 60 Seconds, starring Nicolas Cage. Other new Shelbys followed, including the GT350SR and GT500SR. Each of these new Shelbys is given a Shelby VIN
On November 1, 2007, Unique Performance was raided by the Farmers Branch Police Department due to VIN irregularities and subsequently declared bankruptcy, which effectively ended the Shelby continuation "Eleanor" production.

Luxury 2011 Ford Shelby GT500

Luxury 2011 Ford Shelby GT500
Even though the 2011 Shelby GT500 carries a base price of $49,495 without any options ticked, Ford has already received more than 3,000 orders for the 550HP Mustang since the car was announced earlier this year. But despite the sales success, the Deaborn-based automaker said today that U.S. sales of the 2011 Shelby GT500 will be limited to just 5,500 units for this model year.

Luxury 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 "We are pleased with the pace of retail orders for the 2011 Shelby GT500," said Fritz Wilke, Mustang brand manager. "The car continues to be popular with sports car enthusiasts and collectors who are blown away by the increase in horsepower and performance. The limited production of the 2011 should make this year even more desirable."

Based on the latest Mustang, the 2011 Shelby GT500 is powered by a new aluminum-block 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine, which churns out 550 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque.

On October 5, 2007 Shelby's licensing branch announced it has taken steps to sever the relationship with Unique Performance after numerous complaints and several lawsuits filed by customers who had paid money for "Continuation" Shelby GT-350SRs and GT-500Es (Eleanors) but not received cars.

On November 1, 2007, Unique Performance was raided by the Farmers Branch Police Department due to VIN irregularities and subsequently declared bankruptcy, which effectively ended the Shelby continuation "Eleanor" production
