graft architectswas asked to develop and design an apartment complex for
a japanese client.
confined by city regulations for height and setbacks, as well as a maximum
area allotted for business parameters, the contour and silhouette of the volume
was an almost pre existing condition. graft utilized the oddity of this non designed
shape and gives it a formal identity.
the setbacks on the upper levels are combined into a mound that tops the
apartment box underneath, a new 'living hill'. balconies accentuate the shape
of the building subtracted as cartesian volumes.
